The Holy Bible
Exodus 22:22
Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. 22:23 If thou afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry. 22:24 And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

St. Bridget of Sweden

Saint Birgitta was a mystic and saint, and founded the Bridgettine Order. After surviving her husband, she devoted her life to religion. Canonized in 1391 by Pope Boniface IX, she is the patron saint of widows, and in 1999 Pope John Paul II selected Birgitta to be Europe's patron saint. Her feast is celebrated on July 23, the day of her death in 1373.
