June 23, 2009 - International Widows Day

International Widows Day was first announced May 26, 2005 by Cherie Blair, wife of Tony Blair, a mother of four, and also a human rights lawyer.

On June 23, 2009, we are gathering with Senator Nelson and Congressman McGovern on this day to raise awareness of the "Widow Penalty" issue, and the solution that has been offered in the form of H.R. 1870 and S. 815.  Please make arrangements to see your Senators and your Congressperson.  All you have to do is find the phone number and address at the following link, and call to make an appointment for June 23 for a brief meeting with a staff member.

If possible, we encourage you to travel to Washington, D.C., as we will have meetings designed to help people organize to end the widow penalty, and group visits to Congressional offices.

FLYER FOR JUNE 23, 2009 NEWS CONFERENCE

International Widows Day comes but once a year, and we are at a critical time following the introduction of H.R. 1870 and S. 815, the Widow Bills championed by Congressman Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL).  If the bills do not gain the momentum necessary for passage soon, the debate over comprehensive immigration reform may once again drown out our voice.  If you absolutely cannot get to your Senators and Representatives offices on June 23, please at least call or email their offices.
